Microsoft Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio

Understandably, people sometimes confuse the roles of Microsoft’s Copilot products.

Firstly, let us say that Copilot is not just another add-on or tech rollout.

Artificial intelligence is the next wave and it requires that an organization has a progressive mindset towards its adoption.

Most commonly,

Copilot is accessed via a paid personal or work subscription.

As well as the Chat feature and the fact that Copilot is embedded in the Microsoft 365 Apps it also includes built-in agents such as

Workflows and

Agent Builder.

In addition, there are the industrial strength Copilots:

Cowork and

Studio.

So, let’s look at how these agents compare and where they fit into the Copilot ecosystem.

Workflows vs Copilot Cowork

You setup a Workflow in Copilot when you want to automate a repetitive process.

It up manually and it is similar to Power Automate.

For example,

You could create a workflow that checks

A website every Monday at 9am,

Updates a document in OneDrive with any changes and

Then emails the revised report out to a team.

In contrast,

Cowork delegates and coordinates multi-step workflows that are executed autonomously.

It uses Work IQ that understands

Your organisation,

data,

people,

files,

meetings,

emails and

business context.

Because of this, you could prompt Cowork to

Organise my calendar for next week.

Reduce meeting conflicts, create focus time on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and

Prepare briefing notes for all customer meetings.

To summarize,

Cowork = "Achieve this outcome for me."

Agent Builder vs Copilot Studio

Agent Builder allows you to quickly create an agent for yourself or a small team from existing content i.e. company policies, sales playbooks etc. Agent Builder is the "easy mode" built into Microsoft 365 Copilot

On the other hand Copilot Studio is the full development platform. They are related, but they are not the same thing. Microsoft's own guidance is to use Agent Builder for quick, lightweight agents and Copilot Studio for more advanced or enterprise-wide solutions

Copilot Studio allows you to build custom agents:

AI conversational interfaces that are

Grounded in your knowledge sources

Follow your instructions

Take action using the connectors you've configured.

No code is required for most agents, so a non-developer can create a working agent in a few hours.

Common examples of Copilot Studio agents include

Customer Service Agents,

IT Helpdesk Agents

Sales Agents.

There is an additional cost to Cowork and Copilot Studio in that they use Copilot credits.

A Copilot credit is $0.01. (14/9/2026)

For a user running five medium tasks per week, the cost could be around $20 to $30 per month, in addition to the Copilot license.
